[ some of the amusement in klaus' expression fades, somewhere around that 'intelligence' barb. it's more about the presumptuous insult than about how anything that follows it is true - and it is, in theory at least. klaus would even commend what dan's proposing as simply logical and in his best interests. the problem is dan has interests, motivations he's sure, and that won't do. (to get his memories, his free will, perhaps something else, something more. perhaps something to do with stefan or his sister.)
